Modify Your Office Space to Improve Your Health

August 30, 2018

Most people spend up to 10 hours a day working in an office. A healthy environment can make office-goers feel good about themselves as well as boost their productivity immensely. Even if you do not work for a company that is likely to invest in a complete overhaul of infrastructure to make it more ergonomic, it is still possible to create a right nook for yourself by making small alterations to your existing workspace.

While a desk job may not appear to be as perilous as other jobs like those at a construction site, it poses a host of hazards that could lead to severe health conditions over time. Long periods of stress, a predominantly sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy eating habits are the main risks associated with working within closed walls. As a result, both physical and mental faculties stand a good chance of being adversely affected. Fortunately, there are a few quick things that you can do to give your office space a healthy makeover.

Here are some suggestions to start you off:

  1. Get an Air-Purifier for Your Desk – Closed, air-conditioned spaces are known to trap allergens and pollutants like carpet dust, paint fumes and suspended germs. A small desk air-purifier that has a HEPA filter will help you breathe fresher air and avoid allergies that affect the skin and the respiratory system.

  2. Get A Docking Station for Your Laptop – It is clinically proven that peering down at a laptop screen for too long causes back pain and spondylitis. By getting a docking station or a simple raised platform for your laptop, you can ensure that your monitor is at eye-level. Such an arrangement eliminates the need to keep your neck bent at an abnormal angle throughout the day while working on those lengthy presentations and reports.

  3. Decorate Your Desk in Shades of Green – Softer hues of the color green are said to have a calming effect while also stimulating the brain to think more creatively. You can try hanging small paintings or artwork in green at your desk, or you can even consider adding a few potted plants like an aloe vera plant if you have a green thumb.

  4. Stock Up on Healthy Snacks – It is quite common to experience hunger pangs while you are hard at work at your desk. For times like these, it is vital to have a small cache of healthy snacks like trail mixes, nuts, raisins, whole wheat crackers, and fresh fruit stored in your desk. Not only will you end up snacking on good quality food, but you will also steer clear of junk.

  5. Give Aromatherapy a Shot – A small oil diffuser placed in one corner of your desk is an excellent investment if you are fond of aromatherapy. The smell of fruits like lemons and oranges tends to uplift your mood and invigorate your mind. By using organic essential oils, you can avoid any allergic reactions that are usually triggered by artificial air fresheners and scents.

If you too work in an enclosed home office or at a desk in a corporate office, then a combination of the modifications mentioned above can transform your desk into a healthy sanctuary where you are at your creative best.
