What is a hospitalist?
Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. They engage in clinical care, teaching, research and leadership in the field of general hospital medicine. Although hospitalists do not have an office in the community for outpatient visits, they help manage patients through the continuum of acute care hospitalization. They often see patients in the emergency room and then follow them into the critical care unit and in planning post-acute care. Because of his unusually deep understanding of in-patient care, a hospitalist is able to recognize and diagnose unusual disorders, anticipate problems and rapidly respond to crises or changes in the hospitalized patient’s condition.
